YSA Meaningfulness

Posted by admin on September 17, 2010 in Design, Development, Meta, Participation, Writing |

I was asked to write an article about my company for the IGDA Newsletter special edition on ARGs. I chose to write about why I’m “Going Indie for Meaningfulness and Money“. I thought I’d share it with you since many of you may be traveling down the same path. I also wanted to share with you a postscript. It is a quote from a colleague who I was chatting with in Skype:

Heart, art, and commerce can connect. In fact, that’s where the real gold is.

Great stuff, eh? The IGDA special issue has many articles by people, including some nuggets from Steve Peters and Maureen McHugh, like these tips for meaningful interaction:

* Unlock story content for everyone
* Interact with story characters
* Get information to provide to story characters to move the story along

Read their article and many others here.

    I am so with you here! I had a conversation recently with a friend about a project we were developing a strategy for that took a left turn in a commercial direction that made us uneasy. He mentioned that he was once approached by Monsanto & although he didn't have any other work at that moment, he turned it down – after wrestling with the question of what do I support? what do I invest my time in? What can I not support?

    I'd love to hear this discussed further. Andrea Phillips' proposed SXSW panel on transmedia & ethics of pervasive fiction feels relevant here too

      Yeah, there one project that I turned down because of the brand that was involved. But I'm not really against projects being commercial, or for a brand etc. There are places you can't go with those constraints. I'm interested in exploring outside of those constraints (but with other ones!). đŸ™‚

      And yes, I forgot about Andrea's panel for SXSW. I'll mention that in the dark patterns post.
